Food for Life

This year, we are working towards a Food for Life Award, working towards providing healthy school meals, great lunchtimes and food education that will have a positive impact on both pupils and the wider community.

We have already started by asking for pupil, parent and staff views on school dinners, lunchtimes and cooking and growing in school and we hope to now create a plan of action to improve lunchtimes and develop our food education.

Our School Nutrition Action Group members are:

Mrs Cushing – Teacher

Evie – Pupil

Alexia - Pupil

Mrs Milkhu - Parent

Mrs Green – Teaching Assistant and Play Orientated Senior Midday Supervisory Assistant

Mrs Arnold – Office Manager and Governor

Mr Bailey - Caretaker

In the February parents' evening, we gave each child a seed in a pot to take home to grow. Each class is growing a different plant and will return them to school in the Summer term. We hope to use the food from the plants grown in a cooking activity and we will be sharing this with parents and others in the Summer term.

Here is what each class is growing:

Creswell - peas

Rufford - beans

Clumber - sweet peppers

Thoresby - thyme

Welbeck - kohl rabi

......................................................................................................................................................................

Creswell class have been planting their own beans and peas and have been learning about Jack and the Beanstalk! They made pictograms showing the sizes of different types of leaves and have written about how to plant a bean seed in their literacy work.

...........................................................................................................................................................................

Rufford Class have brought their bean plants back to school after taking care of them at home for the past few months. They have been planted in the class planters ready to keep growing!

Our SNAG group met again on the 10th May 2017 to review all your questionnaires. We looked at issues you are concerned about and created an action plan using some of your ideas. We hope to display school dinner menus in each class’s cloakrooms and here on the school website. We are also planning to have a rota of lunchtime helpers from Welbeck class to help to keep the dinner hall quieter and cleaner.

Here are the school dinner menus for the Summer term 2017:

Tomorrow, Friday 14th July, is our Seaside themed school dinner! The children have been busy making decorations for the dinner hall to make dinner time extra special! Don't forget to dress in seaside clothes such as shorts and t-shirt or a summery dress to raise money for new tables in our eco-garden.

Rufford Class have been tasting different rainforest fruit as part of their Rainforest topic.

...........................................................................................................................................................................

Welbeck Class have harvested their kohl rabi and used it to make soup and potato cakes, with some help from their parents in their end of year Food for Life celebration. Everyone was able to sample the food too! See http://www.st-lukes.notts.sch.uk/kohlrabi/ for more pictures of this!
