English
English at St. Luke’s C of E Primary School
At St. Luke’s, we believe that English is at the heart of learning. Through a rich and inspiring curriculum, we give every child the skills, confidence and creativity to read, write and communicate effectively. Our aim is simple: that every child leaves us not only able to read and write fluently, but with a lifelong love of stories, language and expression.
Reading
We know that reading opens doors. From their very first days in school, children are immersed in a language-rich environment, supported by daily phonics teaching, high-quality class texts, and our carefully curated Reading Spine. Using the VIPERS approach (Vocabulary, Inference, Prediction, Explanation, Retrieval, Sequencing/Summarising), children develop both word reading and comprehension skills. Alongside this, we foster a love of reading by ensuring all children have access to a wide range of exciting books for pleasure, learning and inspiration.
Writing
Our Writing Curriculum is designed to help children find their voice. Lessons are rooted in high-quality texts and provide opportunities for modelling, shared writing, and independent practice. Children write for a variety of purposes and audiences, learning to use grammar, spelling and punctuation with accuracy while developing creativity, imagination and style. Pride in presentation, handwriting and clarity of expression are celebrated across all subjects.
Our Commitment
Whether it’s exploring new authors, writing stories, debating ideas or presenting learning in other subjects, English is woven through daily life at St. Luke’s. We support every child to achieve, adapt teaching to meet individual needs, and celebrate every milestone on their journey as readers and writers.
At St. Luke’s, English is more than a subject – it is the foundation for learning, connection and creativity.
