Physical Education
Physical Education at St. Luke's
At our school, Physical Education is a vital and valued part of every child’s development. We believe that sport and physical activity play a crucial role not only in promoting health and well-being, but also in helping children build a lifelong love for sport and healthy competition. Through PE, children learn the importance of resilience, teamwork, discipline, and respect – essential qualities that support them both in and out of the classroom.
Our PE curriculum is carefully mapped to develop a broad range of physical, social, emotional, and cognitive skills. Each year, children are given the opportunity to build upon their previous learning, as we revisit and deepen their understanding of sports encountered in earlier years. This approach helps pupils to refine their techniques, strengthen their tactical awareness, and grow in confidence as they progress through school.
We place great importance on teaching the fundamental skills and tactics that children need to apply in game situations. From mastering dribbling in basketball to learning strategic positioning in football, our lessons are designed to enable pupils to truly understand and enjoy each sport. PE at our school is about much more than just physical fitness – it’s about developing the whole child.
Competitive sport also plays a key role in our school life. We are proud to have both boys' and girls' football teams who regularly compete against other schools within the county. These opportunities allow our pupils to develop their resilience, sportsmanship, and ability to work as part of a team – all while experiencing the excitement of real competition.
Our commitment to promoting physical activity and broadening children's experiences was recently recognised with the Silver Bassetlaw School Games Award. This award celebrates our dedication to participation in competitive sports and the range of fun and engaging activities we provide for all pupils.
We are proud to offer a variety of exciting experiences beyond traditional sports. Children have recently enjoyed Clubbercise, Circus Skills, and Inclusive Wheelchair Basketball, all of which have been hugely popular and ensured that exercise is enjoyable and accessible to everyone.
At our school, we believe that PE is for everyone. Through our inclusive, skills-based curriculum and a wide range of opportunities, we aim to inspire every child to find joy in movement and build the foundations for a healthy, active future.
