At St Luke’s C of E Primary School, the safety and wellbeing of our children is our highest priority.

Safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility. We are committed to providing a safe, caring and supportive environment in which every child feels valued, listened to and able to flourish.

Our staff receive regular safeguarding training and are expected to remain alert to any concerns about a child’s safety, welfare or wellbeing. Where we have a concern, we will always act in the best interests of the child and, where appropriate, work closely with parents, carers and other professionals.

If you have a concern about the safety or wellbeing of a child, please speak to a member of our safeguarding team as soon as possible.

You can contact the school office during the school day and ask to speak to a member of the safeguarding team. You do not need to be certain that something is wrong before sharing a concern.

Our approach to safeguarding

Safeguarding at St Luke’s is much more than responding when something goes wrong. It is part of our everyday culture and includes:

• creating an environment where children feel safe to speak to trusted adults;

• teaching children how to keep themselves and others safe, including online;

• promoting positive relationships, respectful behaviour and wellbeing;

• identifying children and families who may need additional support;

• responding appropriately to concerns about bullying and child-on-child abuse;

• maintaining robust procedures for attendance, safer recruitment, visitors and site security;

• working with families and external agencies where additional help or protection is needed.

We recognise that children do not always tell an adult directly when something is wrong. Our staff are trained to notice changes in behaviour, presentation, attendance or wellbeing and to respond professionally and sensitively.

Working with parents and carers

We value our partnership with parents and carers and will usually discuss safeguarding concerns with families openly.

There may, however, be occasions when information must be shared with safeguarding professionals without first seeking parental consent, particularly where doing so could place a child at greater risk or compromise a safeguarding response.

Our responsibility will always be to act in the best interests of the child.
