British Values

Promoting Fundamental British Values

In accordance with The Department for Education, we aim to actively promote British Values at St Luke's in order to ensure our  young people leave us prepared for life in modern Britain. Pupils are encouraged to regard people of all faiths, races and cultures with respect and tolerance and understand that while different people may hold different views about what is ‘right’ and ‘wrong’, all people living in England are subject to its law.

The Key Values are:

  • Democracy
  • Rule of Law
  • Individual Liberty
  • Mutual Respect
  • Tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs

Each week, we hold a whole-school Collective Worship and use Picture News to discuss a relevant topic that is in the news that week. We then link this to a British Value and a Protected Characteristic, allowing us to think carefully about how these values are fundamental both within and outside our school community.

We also hold a Protected Characteristics week within each academic year, which complements what we are already doing to support our children's learning on this topic. Opportunities for discussion are threaded through our curriculums, from English to History, but this week gives us an additional chance to discuss relevant issues and see how changes are made over time. During this week, each of our classes focus on a different text within their English lessons and complete different activities surrounding it.
