Music
At St. Luke’s C of E, we intend to deliver a Music curriculum which is accessible to all and that will maximise the development of every child’s ability and academic achievement. As set out in the National Curriculum for Music, we aim to provide pupils with opportunities to perform, listen to, review and evaluate music across a wide range of periods, genres and traditions.
We deliver our curriculum using the Sing Up scheme of work, supported by additional resources, to ensure lessons are engaging, progressive and inclusive. We also work in partnership with the Inspire Music Service to provide specialist teaching in instrumental performance, including opportunities for children to learn the ukulele and to experience African drumming. These experiences broaden children’s musical skills, deepen their appreciation of different musical traditions, and build their confidence in performance.
Through our scheme of work, we aim to:
-
Inspire children to sing, perform and compose with increasing confidence and imagination.
-
Enable pupils to listen attentively, appraise a wide variety of music and respond with their own ideas.
-
Develop understanding of key musical elements such as pitch, rhythm, tempo, texture, timbre and dynamics.
-
Build children’s ability to use and read musical notation.
-
Provide opportunities for pupils to perform, both in the classroom and in wider contexts, such as assemblies, services and community events.
The Music curriculum is taught progressively through the key stages, with clear milestones in singing and performing, improvising and composing, and listening and appraising. Children experience music practically through voice, instruments and technology, learning to work individually and collaboratively.
By the end of Key Stage 2, children will have developed the confidence to perform for different audiences, an appreciation of music across cultures and history, and the creative skills to compose and reflect on their own work. Music at St. Luke’s helps children to grow in self-expression, resilience and confidence, while fostering a sense of joy and community through shared musical experiences.
Sing Up Primary’s Music scheme of work enables pupils to meet the end of Key Stage attainment targets in the National Curriculum and the aims also align with those in the National Curriculum.
