French

At St. Luke’s C of E, we intend to deliver a French curriculum which is accessible to all and that will maximise the development of every child’s ability and academic achievement. As set out in the National Curriculum for Languages, we aim to provide pupils with the knowledge, skills and cultural understanding to communicate with confidence in French.

We deliver our curriculum using Language Angels, ensuring that teaching is well-sequenced, engaging and inclusive. We want children to develop curiosity and passion for learning a modern foreign language, and to gain the confidence to listen, speak, read and write in French.

Through our scheme of work, we aim to foster children’s ability to:

  • Engage in conversations, ask and answer questions, and express their ideas clearly.

  • Develop accurate pronunciation and intonation so that they can be understood by others.

  • Broaden their vocabulary and deepen their understanding of grammar.

  • Appreciate stories, songs, poems and rhymes in French.

  • Develop cultural awareness by exploring French traditions, customs and daily life.

French is taught weekly, with progression mapped carefully across year groups. Children build knowledge step by step, starting with everyday words and phrases, moving towards longer sentences and extended writing. Songs, games and practical activities are used to make language learning meaningful and enjoyable.

By the end of Key Stage 2, pupils will have made good progress in French and developed an enthusiasm for exploring other languages and cultures. Our aim is to prepare children to be confident global citizens, equipped with the skills and knowledge to thrive in our multicultural world.
