History
This week, we have been thinking about Remembrance and why it is important to remember special events. We learnt more about the poppy and how it relates to World War One. We are going to be finding out much more about the war over the coming weeks!
This week, we have been reading lots of different books in order to find out more about the war. We have been doing this as a class and also independently during reading times. We now know that World War One took place between 1914 and 1918 and some of the countries who were involved. In our History lesson, we focused on life within the trenches and thought about what it might have been like for the soldiers who were fighting. We were able to make some comparisons between what the trenches were like then and how they look now and we also made some inferences about what the soldiers may have been able to taste, smell, see, feel and hear.
We have been thinking more about why it is important to remember what others have done for us and how we can show our appreciation to others. We then discussed more about what it might have been like for the children during World War One and how they might feel at home whilst family members were away fighting. We talked about the things they might do and how they might spend time with friends or play outside.
We have been studying the features of a war memorial this week and have focused on the things we might find. We looked at the memorial in Worksop and also in London, discussing that the names of soldiers are on these memorials. We learnt more about what happens during Remembrance Sunday and how poppy wreaths are laid around the memorials. We then made our own poppies which will be displayed on our Remembrance board in the classroom.
