Phonics

This week, we have been focusing on the alternative spelling choices for the long /oo/ sound which would include 'ew', 'u-e' and 'ue'. Can you remember any of the words which contain these sounds? We looked at words including 'screw', 'drew', 'flute', 'mute', and 'blue'. Can you write a sentence to show the words which contain these sounds?

This week, we have been looking at the alternative spelling choices for the /igh/ sound. We looked at the sounds 'ie', 'y', 'i-e' and 'i'. This included words like 'tie', 'pie', 'by', 'my', 'like', 'bike', 'find' and 'kind'. Can you have a go at writing a sentence using some of these words?

We have continued recapping any Phase 5 sounds that the children have found tricky because there are so many alternative spelling choices for the same sound! We have a had a lot of fun using Nessy and the children have been able to write some super tricky words. Then, we had a go at using these words in sentences and some children were able to use a range of conjunctions to extend their sentences to add more detail. Well done, Year 1!

This week, the children have completed their Phonics Screening Check. The whole Key Stage One team are so proud of the children and how hard they have worked - well done! We have continued recapping over all of the sounds to go over any gaps and have particularly focused on /sh/ alternative spelling choices.

In Phonics we have been recapping all of the Phase 2, 3 and 5 sounds. We have had a look at words which contain these sounds and alternative spelling choices. We discussed sound families and how some sounds are the same but they are spelt differently.
