Portland

We welcomed Mr Campbell and Mr Williams from Outwood Academy Portland today.

The Learning Manager for Year 7 is Miss Carnell.   Any questions go to her first.

The Core Values of the school are to be kind, be proud and be resilient.  We expect everyone to be kind.  Rewards are given for any work which you are proud of.  We teach everyone to be resilient and not give up and give everything a try.  These core values will help for the future.

All phones must be turned of on entering school.  If phones are seen these are taken away until collected by and adult.

Planners are to be brought into school everyday.  Your personal timetable will be in this. A map of the school is in here to help you, but any adult will always available if you do get lost.  All members of the SLT can be found in the corridors wearing fluorescent vests.  The school layout is on 2 levels, with 3 main corridors on both.  If you get lost and are late for lessons, there will be no detentions during the first two weeks for this.

Attendance should be good.  Missing lessons means it's harder to catch up.

Collaborative learning.  Seating arrangements in class are in tables of 4.  Learning structures are where you may work with others on the table.  Seating plans are changed every half term.

Praise Culture.  Every lesson, a teacher rewards at least 3 pupils who are classroom champions.

Consequences.  Every classroom has a consequences board.  Levels are C1 to C5 (C5 is isolation).  Poor behaviour is not tolerated.

Uniform

Every student wears the same.  Uniform is provided, this includes sports kits.  All uniform must be named. Plain black shoes (not trainers) must be worn.

Uniform must not be modified!  Uniform is to be kept on to/from school. Jewellery is not to be worn.  Watches can be worn - but not Smart watches.

Discreet make up can worn.

Questions

  • How much homework will we get?  There is no set amount of homework.
  • What if I loose my planner?  A new one needs to be bought.  If it is not brought in repeatedly, a detention will be given.  A temporary planner is available from the school office for the day.
  • Is there a football team?  Yes.  Just turn up.  There is a boys, girls and mixed group.
  • Can you go to the toilet?  There are lots of toilets in the buildings.  Going during lesson is discouraged, but is not stopped.  You have 5 minutes to go to toilet and this is written in your planner.
  • Are the corridors crowded?  There are one way systems in place and everyone walks on the left.  Staff are available in the corridor.
  • Are there multiple year groups in the class?  You will only be taught in your own year group.  Tutor groups are in your peer group too and you will probably in the same group as 2/3 you already know.
  • Bags?  If you don't bring a bag, you will be provided with a temporary drawstring bag.  Bags can be of any sort.
  • Hair/Nails?  The school works on a business dress policy.  You will be asked to change.
  • Bus - do you have to pay?  It is free and you will have a pass.  Buses aren't staffed.  Any poor behaviour may mean you have to walk to school.  The late bus is the quieter.
  • What do I have to bring?  Pencil case, planner, own lunch (if bringing from home).
  • How long is lunch?  Half an hour.
  • Blazers?  In hot weather you don't have to wear blazers in school.  They must be worn in corridors.  You will be told if can leave blazers at home.
  • How long is detention?  One hour.

Transition day.

Line up in the tennis group area after leaving the bus.  You will be directed by members of staff as to where to go.  Look out for your tutor group and you will be taken to the school hall.  P.E kit is not needed on this day.  Wear normal school uniform.
