Year 1

09/05/2023 - 12/05/2023

The children have started this week off by looking at fractions! We had a variety of shapes out and the children had to determine if we could split the shape in half. We discussed that if something is in half then it has to have two equal sides. We drew some beautiful shapes in our Maths books (using rulers) and coloured in half of them. Using this knowledge, we focused on half of an amount. We used cubes and blocks to help us count to a given amount and then chopped it in half!

In Maths, we have been looking at how to make equal groups by grouping and sharing. The children enjoyed using concrete representations to help them visualise how to share and how many are in each group. In addition to this, we looked at using arrays to help us work out how many rows and columns there are to help us with our multiplication. I wonder if you could write your own array for your grownups to show how we can get to the number 25...

24/04/2023 - 28/04/2023

This week in Maths, we have looking at multiplication. We had a go at counting in 10s and the children quickly began to notice the patterns that we have within the 10 times table - they all end in 0! Then, we had a go at working out what equal groups are. What are equal groups? Why are they used? We used ten-frames to work out how many groups there were, how many cubes were in each group and how many they were altogether! Here are some pictures below.

17/04/2023 - 21/04/2023

This week, the children have been introduced to mass, capacity and volume. We talked about measuring mass, what mass is and what we could use to measure it. We had lots of fun using the weighing scales to work out the mass of something. In addition to this, the children talked about what capacity and volume are. We compared the volume within different containers and had lots of discussion around this.
