Living Eggs

We have some 'egg-citing' news!

Setting up the incubator and learning a little more about the hatching process.

Tuesday - we are noticing some movements!

Tuesday

Today we have been looking at the eggs and have seen some of them moving! We are hoping to see some hatching tomorrow. We learnt more about the structure of the chicks once they have hatched and discussed what they might look like over the next couple of days. We then learnt about the life cycle of a chicken and how it hatches and grows before more eggs are laid for the process to start again!

Wednesday

Today we came to school and 3 chicks had hatched overnight! There were 2 girls and one boy. We were excited to see what the chicks looked like. We could see some pipping in some of the other eggs, which are little cracks that show it is going to hatch soon. Then, this afternoon, another boy has hatched from the egg! We were so lucky that we got to watch this happen. Hopefully we will have more eggs hatching over the next few days smiley

Thursday

We now have 9 chicks that have hatched in total! Most of these have been moved to the brooder box and will be fed each day by us. We will also need to top up the water and change their bedding too. We learnt more about responsibility today and how we are now responsible for the chicks that have hatched. We talked about the things they need in order to survive, like food, water and warmth. We also then discussed the things the chicks might want, such as love, handling and family.

Friday

We now have all 10 eggs that have hatched! We have really enjoyed this week with the chicks and are learning a lot about them. Next week, we hope that they are ready to be held by each of us smiley

Today, we have been able to hold the chicks! We were all so calm and caring towards them.
