Year 1

03/10/2022 - 07/10/2022

This week, we have been learning all about ordering numbers and the ordinal numbers. Can you tell your grown-ups what ordinal numbers are? Why do we use them? We have been discussing and doing some practical activities with ordering objects in the classroom and talking about what order they are in. For example, 1st, 2nd and 3rd. We talked about other times we would use the ordinal numbers terminology including in competitions.

26/09/2022 - 30/09/2022

This week in Maths, we have been looking at how to order objects and numbers. We used the terminology we learnt last week which was greater than and less than. The children really enjoyed the practical sessions where they ordered the amounts and were able to explain whether they ordered them from the greatest amount to the smallest or the smallest amount to the greatest! We built on our knowledge of ordering amounts to ordering numbers. The children have a really good understanding of numbers which are greater than or less than other numbers. Here are some of the pictures from their practical session.

19/09/22 - 23/09/22

This week, we have been consolidating our learning of comparing numbers up to ten! At the start of the week, we began by comparing objects. We used the terminology 'greater than', 'less than' and 'equals to' to compare the groups of objects. The children were then introduced to the symbols <, = and > and they used counters, blocks and counting bears to help demonstrate which group is greater than, less than or equal to another.

Representing different numbers with practical objects.

We have been recapping our understanding of counting and representing numbers to 10 and we have also looked at one more and one less of a given number to 10. We used tens frames and objects to help us with our learning!
