Phonics focus of the day - 29th June, 2020 -

Today we are going to look at words with a triple consonant sound in them. We have looked at these before and you know I like to call them 'quick-as-a-flash' sounds.

  • Can you say these sounds?
  • Can you practise writing these sounds?

If a grown up writes these words can you read them? - shrink, shrimp, shrine, shrill, shrug, shred, shrub, mushroom, splash, splat, split, splint, splendid, splutter.

  • Can you underline the three consonants in these words?
  • Can you write 1 or 2 sentences using 1 or more of these words in it?

Today we are going to look at words with a triple consonant sound in them - 'spr' and 'scr'.

  • Can you say these sounds?
  • Can you practise writing these sounds?

Today we are going to look at words with a triple consonant sound in them - 'str' and 'thr'.

  • Can you say these sounds?
  • Can you practise writing these sounds?

If a grown up writes these words can you read them? - string, strum, strain, strand, strap, stray, stream, street, strong, stress, stretch, strike, strict, strip, stripe, thrash, throat, throw, thread, threw, thrill.

Phonics focus of the day - 2nd July, 2020 -

Today we are going to look at words with two syllables in them. They can be quite tricky to read but if we split them into two parts it does make them easier to read.

  • Can you spot where you could split them in half?

If a grown up writes these words can you read them? - traffic, blanket, flannel, blossom, problem, trumpet, channel, children, hundred, actress, husband, dentist, publish, insult, contest, pumpkin, invent, infect.

  • Where would you break down the word?
  • Can you write 1 or 2 sentences using 1 or more of these words in it?

Phonics focus of the day - 3rd July, 2020 -

Today we are going to look at words with open syllables in them, which means you have to be extra good at spotting those split digraphs. T

  • Can you spot the split digraphs?
  • Look closely at how the 'y' at the end of a word changes vowel back to its letter name. 'y' = 'ee' sound.

If a grown up writes these words can you read them? - later, lazy, crazy, lady, paper, baby, basic, label, hotel, open, moment, total, bonus, pony, local.

  • Can you write 1 or 2 sentences using 1 or more of these words in it?
