Summer 1 Learning Overview

Autumn 2 Medium Term Plan

Welcome to Rufford Class!

Year 1 and Year 2

I hope you have all had a wonderful summer break and are looking forward to working in Rufford Class this year. We have so many exciting things planned and I am sure we are all going to have lots of fun! Mrs Green will be with us each day and I know that she is also looking forward to sharing this year with you all.

Here are the topics for each term:

Autumn term 1 Grand Designs - What is it like to live in a castle? We will be learning all about the Battle of Hastings and we'll be designing and creating our own shields.

Autumn term 2 Amazing Animals - In this topic, we are going to be looking at animals in a lot of detail! This will include animal dancing, animal stories and learning all about the weather and climate. Also, we are going to create our own narrative poems.

Spring term 1 - Inspirational People - What makes people inspiring to others? We will be looking at George Stephenson and transport. Let's draw our own portrait of someone inspiring!

Spring term 2Little Planters - We are going to be learning all about plants and creating our own bottle greenhouses and flower pot people - how exciting!

Summer term 1Ahoy There! – Should we call Grace O’Malley a pirate? We are going to be creating our own supersized pirate ship!

Summer term 2African Adventures We’ll be learning all about a Zambian village and creating our own tribal collages. We’ll be having a look at The Lion King and creating our own singing performance.

Reading Books

We will be giving out two new reading books each week so that you can practise your reading at home as often as you like. We require all children to read at home at least three times a week. Please fill in the reading diary every time you have read. If you have read three times that week, we shall add a stamp on to your reading rangers bookmark! When your reading rangers bookmark is full, you will receive a certificate. Please hand in your books every Monday morning so that they can be changed and given back to you. Please can all reading books be kept in the labelled plastic wallets - thank you.

Homework and Spellings

You will be given a homework sheet that will include a task to complete as well as some phonics and spellings tasks. Any tasks will need to be sent into our class email - rufford@st-lukes.notts.sch.uk. This will be given out on Friday and should be emailed in on the Wednesday. The task will be a fun task either about something we have been learning about in class or researching something for the following week. Let me know if you have any trouble accessing a computer at home for these tasks. You will be rewarded for how hard you try with tree tokens.

PE

Our PE lessons will be every Monday and Thursday. Please come to school wearing the appropriate sports clothing for PE. PE kit is a plain or school logo white, green or yellow t shirt and plain black trousers or shorts. Sensible outdoor shoes will also be required. No football kits are to be worn please and earrings need to be removed or covered with plasters before coming to school.

Equipment

All equipment that your child needs will be provided by school. I am happy for children to bring in their own pencil cases if they have them, however they are then their responsibility. You will need to bring your own lunchbox if you are not having a school lunch as well as a drinks bottle and a book bag. Your child will get the opportunity to show items during show and tell, and you will be notified in advance if it is your child's turn to bring something special in. Please can I ask that all uniform/bags/bottles have names on as otherwise we cannot guarantee that items will be returned if they are lost.

In a morning, children will need to line up at the junior entrance by the wall and will be dismissed from the corner near Little Acorns.

Please feel free to contact me if you or your child have any concerns throughout the year. The best time to speak to me is after school, but I am also available via the class or office email where you can arrange an appointment for a phone call or meeting.

I am looking forward to welcoming you all into the class and having a fantastic year of learning!

Miss Phillipson
