English

Our story focus in English for the next few weeks is 'Anansi and the Golden Pot' and we will be studying newspaper reports, aiming to write our own! This week, we have read the story and discussed what a newspaper report is, looking at the features we might find within a newspaper report and recapping on how to include adjectives in our writing to add detail. We discussed the importance of adjectives in a newspaper report in order to give the reader as much information as possible. We also thought about how we can vary the openings of our sentences so that our writing is not repetitive, suggesting some interesting examples of how to start our sentences.

I have been super impressed with the children this week as they have worked so hard in English! We read a newspaper report about Anansi and retrieved information from it, identifying the different features within the report. Then, we wrote about the 5 Ws, summarising information that links to each of these. Next week, we will be planning and writing our own newspaper reports about Anansi!

This week, we have used Microsoft Word to write our newspaper reports. We have planned these, thinking about the main focus of our report and what our headline will be. Then, we have used Word to input our reports, adding a picture and caption. Super work smiley

This week, we have moved on to studying The Lion King and spent our first lesson discussing the story and looking at the front cover of the book. We talked about what we knew about the characters and what we could infer based on their appearance on the cover. We discussed the relationships between the characters and their personalities, using adjectives to describe them. We learnt more about using two adjectives in order to create more of an impact on the reader and were able to group our ideas into paragraphs.

We continued learning about story structure and related this to the Lion King this week. We acted out a scene from the story and had to use our facial expressions and acting skills as we weren't allowed to say anything! We worked together in small groups to rehearse our performances and then performed them to the rest of the class. We have also focused on the setting of our own story and have been using nouns, pronouns and adjectives to help us.

This week, we have been writing about our main characters for our own story. We have given them names and have described their appearance and personalities, also focusing on the relationships they will have with other characters. We have planned our stories, thinking about the beginning, middle and end and will be writing these in our Gold Write books next week!
