As our school is near to a canal, we focused on water safety this week. We discussed how to remain safe around water, but also what to do if we found ourselves in any difficulties. We talked about who to contact and what we would then need to say to the emergency services to help them find us. We also learnt more about how to stay safe if we fell in the water, by staying on our backs and floating. We discussed how important it is to not jump in after someone. We also shared information about The Canal and River Trust so that the children could access more information at home.
This week, we have focused on oral hygiene. We learnt how we should brush our teeth twice a day using a pea sized amount of toothpaste. We shouldn't rinse with water or mouthwash immediately after brushing, as this removes the protection from our enamel! We talked about how sugary foods impact our teeth and how we need to visit the dentist regularly. We have completed an investigation, where we are studying what happens to our enamel through different drinks. We have used egg shells to represent our teeth and have left them in water, juice, sugary cola and an energy drink! We will be assessing these in a couple of days to see if any of the egg shells have changed in any way.
