Using Equipment

This week we have been using the cuisenaire rods to investigate equivalence in our small groups. The children worked in teams to make create lots of different patterns that were of equal length to the orange rod. In total the children found 30 ways of finding equivalent lengths to the orange rod.
We have then started to use the cuisenaire rods to investigate equivalent fractions. We have been identifying which rods would be equivalent to 1/2, 1/4, 1/3, 3/4 and 1/5. The children were excellent at ordering the fractions and were able to locate rods that they thought were similar.
