Science

For our first lesson this half term, we learnt how the Earth rotates to create day and night. We discussed how the sun orbits the Earth and how the Earth is also constantly moving. We now know that the Earth tilts, which is why we have longer periods of daylight at certain times of the year. The Arctic Circle gets no sunlight at all during some parts of the year because of it's position on the Earth! We completed an experiment to replicate the sun's orbit of the Earth, which helped us visualise and discuss day and night.

This week, we have been learning more about solids, liquids and gases. We looked at the properties of each and suggested examples and we also had to categorise some items into the correct group.

We have conducted an experiment to learn more about evaporation this week! We made predictions about what might happen, before explaining the method and equipment we would use. Then, after the experiment, we recorded the results! We had two bowls of water, each containing 200ml. We put one of the bowls of water next to the heater and the other one as far away from the heater as we could. We predicted that, due to the heat, the bowl near the heater would evaporate first and therefore would have less water in when we measured at the end of our experiment. We were right! We also discussed how we could improve our experiment if we were to do it again. Super work, scientists!
