Year 1

We have moved on to looking at comparing length and height this week! We discussed what the word 'length' means and the vocabulary that we use when comparing length, such as 'longer' and 'longest'. We also talked about how lengths can be the same and remembered that the word to describe the same is 'equal'. We looked for objects around the classroom that were longer than our pencil, but we had to make sure that we lined them all up evenly so that we could be sure when making comparisons. We then found objects that were shorter than our pencil!

We then learnt about what 'height' means and discussed the vocabulary, such as 'shorter' and 'taller'. We worked with our partners to see who was taller and shorter and we also learnt that Nicole was the tallest in our class! We had to find people who were shorter than us and then had to find things that were taller. Miss Phillipson and Mrs Butterfield were taller than us, but we also spotted that the door and the cupboard were taller too! We talked about how we had to make sure we were measuring from the same point, and noticed that we wouldn't be able to compare ourselves with the height of the window because it didn't start from the floor. Some super investigations happened this week!

This week, we have been learning how to count in 2s and 5s. First, we counted in 2s and discussed what we noticed about the numbers - they are all even! We then moved on to counting in 5s and found out that all the numbers either end in a 5 or a 0. We used objects to help us count in groups and then did it on our own. Super work, Year 1!

We have continued to learn more about the numbers to 50 by looking at one more and one less than any number up to 50! We then moved on to comparing objects and numbers up to 50 before then ordering numbers in both ascending and descending order. We are now super with our number knowledge to 50 blush

27/02/23 - 03/03/23

This week, we have been focusing on our numbers to 50! We have been comparing number sentences and learning more about the place value of each digit in the two-digit numbers. We have been working hard on our place value knowledge and have been able to compare numbers as part of this.
