Phonics

09/05/2023 - 12/05/2023

We have continued recapping over sounds that we have found tricky. We looked at the phoneme /s/ and /z/ written as 'se'. This included words such as 'horse', 'house' 'pause' and 'use'. We found this one tricky because there is a silent 'e' at the end that we don't need to sound out when we are reading words that contain the 'se' sound. To keep this fresh in our minds, we continued with the /s/ phoneme and focused on the sound 'sc' and 'st (l)'. Words that contain these sounds are 'scent', 'cresent' and 'rustling'. Can you remember anymore? The 'st' followed by 'le' at the end of words sounds /s/. E.g. in “castle”, the 's' at the end of the first syllable sounds /s/ and in the second syllable 't' is silent and 'le' sounds /ul/ to make /c/ /a/ /s/ /ul/.

02/05/2023 - 05/05/2023

In Phonics, we have been recapping the sounds /ai/ written as 'ey', 'eigh' and 'ei'. It can be confusing trying to recognise which /ai/ sound is in the word, so it's important that we continue to practise these sounds. Can you name any words that contain these sounds? For example, they, eight and rein.

24/04/2023 - 28/04/2023

We have been continuing to recap over Phase 5 sounds this week. We have looked at sounds including /r/ written as 'wr' which would include words such as wrist and write. In addition to this, we looked at the trigraphs 'eer' and 'ere' which sounds like /ear/. The words included are: beer, deer, here and sphere. We had a go at using these words in our own sentences.

Please continue to practise these sounds at home with your grown-ups in preparation for the upcoming Phonics Screening Check.

17/04/2023 - 21/04/2023

This week in Phonics, we have been recapping split diagraphs. Although the children can spot them during our Phonics session, the children are struggling to spot them whilst they are reading. We have recapped over 'a-e', 'e-e', 'i-e', 'o-e' and 'u-e'. Can you tell your grownups what words contain these sounds?

In addition to this, the children have been completing guided reading three times a week with me. We have been working on our fluency this week!
