In Maths, we have moved on from addition to learning about the opposite of addition - subtraction! The children have really enjoyed finding different methods of working out subtraction sums including the crossing off method and using concrete resources to help them visualise the subtraction sums. We discussed how subtraction is the opposite to addition because we are taking away rather than adding the numbers together. The children had a very good understanding that the number gets smaller when we take away.

We have continued solidifying our knowledge of the number bonds to ten. We discussed why it is important to know our number bonds and how this links to addition. We looked at when we add two numbers together, the number will be bigger. We used concrete resources such as the counting bears and cubes whilst using the part-whole model and ten frames to help us work out our addition sums.
14/11/2022 - 18/11/2022
The children have been learning the number bonds to 10. We discussed the patterns that the number bonds have and the children quickly realised that the bigger the number, the more number bonds there will be.

This week, we have recapped the addition sign. We discussed what the addition sign looks like, what happens when two numbers are added together and had a go at using the part-whole model and ten-frame to help with the children with their addition sums. The children began to notice the pattern that you can do 5 + 3 = 8 and change the numbers to 3 + 5 = 8 to still get the same answer! We have been recapping our knowledge of the number bonds to ten and the children did fantastic!

This week, we have been solidifying our knowledge of the part-whole model. We have been identifying what is the whole and what parts make up the whole number. We have used concrete resources to help us visualise the whole and then can see the two parts.
