Yesterday we opened our potato growing kit which had been sent to us from The Potato Council. We had two different varieties of potato seed - rocket variety and regional variety. The Potato Council sent four rocket seeds and three regional ones.
The seeds are called tubers but before they can be planted in soil they need to go through a 'chitting' process to allow the shoots to grow. We discovered that the extra rocket variety seed had been sent to us for a very important reason. We can use this for a science experiment called 'Beneath the Soil'. The seed is placed in a clear plastic bottle, filled with compost, then kept inside so that we can actually see what happens as the shoots grow further and new potatoes are formed.
