Art

After half term you are going to start creating a Victorian toy theatre with puppets.

- What types of toys would you associate with the Victorian era?

Did you know that teddy bears were not made until 1903? Challenge- do you know why they are called teddy bears?

Watch the video clip below that discusses toys and games in the Victorian era for rich and poor children.

Puppet shows became very popular in the Victorian era. Although they were first introduced in the 1500s, they became a big source of entertainment during Queen Victoria's rule.

- Do you know of any puppet shows?

Toy theatres were then introduced. Plays from the west end were reproduced in a miniature way however, this declined in the 1940's.

- Do you know why?

In the 1800s highly coloured prints became popular of actresses and actors and they were sold in London's Theatre Land. In 1811 William West began printing characters and selling them so that families could create their own shows.

Activity: After half term you are going to be creating a toy theatre. Today, I would like you to draw out and plan your design. Follow the video clip below for guidance.
